BIAŁA LĄDECKA

Commune: Stronie Śląskie (pow. kłodzki, woj. dolnośląskie)

Framework element or context represented:
Deep regional metamorphism in the Sudety Mts.

Primary geological/geomorphological interest:
Proterozoic and Early Palaeozoic granulites and eclogites of the metamorphic massif of Snieznik-Ladek.

Comparative assessment justification:
Series of deep regional metamorphism rarely croping out in the Sudety Mts.

Protection status and accessibility:
The outcrop, being an important place of petrological research, should be protected as a geosite.

Character of site: Natural outcrop.

Area: 0.01 ha

Altitude: 540 m a.s.l.

Lithology: other metamorphic rocks

Discipline: Petrography, Stratigraphy of Proterozoic

Process Age: Quaternary, Paleogene, *all periods

Bedrock Age: Devonian, Silurian, Ordovician, Cambrian, Proterozoic, *all periods

Description of primary interest:
The series of granulites, interbedded with eclogites, are petrological curiosity because of rarity of their outcrops. They represent a facies of the deepest regional metamorphism. Several petrographic types of granulites occur. The dark ones contain equal quantities of pyroxene (omphacite), plagioclase, quartz and garnets concentrated in the laminas, while the pale ones consist mainly of quartz, potash feldspar and plagioclase, with numerous fine crystals of garnet. In some parts, the rock is nearly composed of only pyroxene and garnets. Those are the remnants of altered eclogites. Series of rocks occur on the terraces of the Biała Lądecka River in Stary Gierałtów village.
