POTOK HALICZ W BUKOWCU (HALICZ STREAM IN BUKOWIEC)

Commune: Lutowiska (pow. bieszczadzki, woj. podkarpackie)

Framework element or context represented:
Paleoenvironment, fossils and stratigraphy of deposits in Eastern Carpathians.

Description of primary interest:
The site is situated in the right bank of the Halicz Stream in Bukowiec. It is about 80 m long and up to 7 m high. Located within the Silesian Unit and represents a very thick complex of the Krosno Beds (Oligocene), lying in the reversed position and dipping to SW. They are developed as thick-bedded sandstones, with horizons of shales and thin- and medium-bedded sandstones. The stratigraphically lower part of the site represents a complex of limestones and green shales, resting on thin-bedded Krosno sandstones and shales, while the upper as strongly deformed, sandy shales of the Krosno and Menilite types with exotics. The strata described in their lower part are characteristic deposits of a submarine slump, and in the upper of a dense, cohesive flow. The fragments of layers of limestones and marly limestones from the lower part represent olistolites and contain so rich macrofauna, mainly of bivalves and snails that sometimes grade into shell agglomerates. The upper part of the outcrop, with the thickness of about 20 m, contains ash-grey and brownish, sandy shales with exotics of micaceous schists, marbles and quartzites up to 25 cm in diameter, and fine, biohermal accumulations of bryozoans, lithothamnia, bivalves, snails and nummulites. In both parts of the slump are present lensoidal, ash-grey, micritic, ferrugineous dolomites. Their thickness is about 30 cm. The Krosno Beds enclosing the site are of the Oligocene age, while the fauna from the slump series represents Upper Eocene /Priabonian/. The rocks containing this fauna were transported from the SE extension of the Maramureš Massif, where they had been developed in shallow-water or even brackish sedimentary environment.
