Description of primary interest:
The site in Węgierka includes an old quarry, existing already in the 19th century. Currently it is the abandoned excavation with an almost vertical wall about 20 m high and 120 m long. The Węgierka Marl occur there as three olistholites, resting in direct contacts. The marls are bedded (their layers are from some cm to 1.5 m thick), with diversified compactness and sand content. The general bearings of the largest of these lithosomes are 120/80/SW. The marls are positioned within the Leszczyna Mbr of the Ropianka Fm (Inoceramian Beds) in the Skole Unit of the Flysch Carpathians. The Leszczyny Mbr comprises the strata from the upper part of Late Maastrichtian to the lower part of Early Palaeocene that are up to 300 m thick. Being olistholites, the Węgierka Marls themselves represent Campanian and Maastrichtian on the basis of foraminifers, inocerams, and cephalopods. Tafocenosis and sedimentary structures present in the marls indicate a shallow, epicontinental environment of their deposition. The Węgierka Marl is one of the earliest described members in the Outer Carpathians distinguished due to rich macrofauna, an atypical feature of flysch basins. The marls occur mainly in the form of lensoidal lithosomes with the character of olistholites, whose thickness ranges from some tens of centimeters to some tens of meters, and are usually situated within submarine slumps, called the Makówka Slump Debris. They are prevalently localized in the central and north-eastern (marginal) parts of the Skole Unit. The rocks were used for calcination of hydrated lime from the 19th century till 1980s.
