PROFIL GRZEGORZOWICE-SKAŁY (GRZEGORZOWICE-SKAŁY PROFILE)

Commune: Nowa Słupia (pow. kielecki, woj. świętokrzyskie)

Framework element or context represented:
Sequence of the Devonian with stratotype of the Grzegorzowice Fm - Łysogóry subregion of the Świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mts; Cenozoic paleokarst.

Primary geological/geomorphological interest:
Stratotype of Grzegorzowice Formation, paleontological site, paleokarst forms.

Comparative assessment justification:
Almost complete sequence of Devonian of the northern, Łysogóry subregion of the Świętokrzyskie Mts, which substantially differs from the southern, Kielce subregion. Within the Łysogóry subregion the Grzegorzowice-Skały section can be referred to Świętomarz-Śniadka section, whereas at the interregional scale it can be compared with sequences of the Kielce, Kraków-Silesian and Moravian areas.

Protection status and accessibility:
Partly protected since 1995 in the nature reserve “Wąwóz w Skałach” (3.18 ha) – accessible, partly on the touristic trail; the importat part of profile is nearness of the reserve.

Character of site: Chain of outcrops in the valley.

Area: 30 ha

Altitude: 235-290 m a.s.l.

Lithology: sandstones, limestones, dolostones, marls, shales, silstones, claystones

Discipline: Palaeobiology, Geomorphology, Palaeoenvironment, Stratigraphy of Phanerozoic

Process Age: Devonian, *all periods

Bedrock Age: Neogene, Paleogene, Devonian, *all periods

Description of primary interest:
The rock sequence is exposed in a chain of outcrops scattered at slopes of Dobruchna creek valley at the distance of 3,5 km. The oldest are quartzitic sandstones of the Zagórze Fm (Emsian) – terrigenous-marine deposits with placoderms. Grzegorzowice Fm (Upper Emsian-Lower Eifelian, 200 m thick) is formed of various rocks with fossils: corrals, crinoids, brachiopods, ostracods, trilobites, conodonts and acritarchs. In the formation some members were distinguished: Bukowa Góra Shale M., Wydryszów Marls and Limestones M., Kapkazy Sandstones M., Rzepin Dolomites M., Grzegorzowice Limestones M. Wojciechowice Fm (Eifelian, 500 m) crops out in a quarry and natural crags. It is formed of dolomites with limestone and marl inserts, locally rich in stromatoporoids, corrals, brachiopods (new taxa) and crinoids. It was deposited in very shallow water environment. Skały Beds (Eifelian, Givetian, 250 m) represent shales and marls with layers of biogenic and biodetrital limestones full of fossils: brachiopods, crinoids (new taxa), ostracods, coralls, gastropods, lamellibranchs, tentaculitids, conodonts, trilobites and nautiloids. Świętomarz Beds (Middle Givetian, 80-100 m) comprises claystones and siltstones interbedded with sandstones with paleoflora and rare fauna. Pokrzywianka Beds are formed of biogenic limestones (10 m) with stromatoporoids, corrals, brachiopods, ostracods and trilobites. Uppermost Nieczulice Beds (Upper Givetian) – claystones, marls and limestones with brachiopods, nautiloids, goniatites, ostracods, crinoids, radiolarians and conodonts. In a quarry of dolomites of the Wojciechowice Fm Tertiary paleokarst doline crops out.
