Summary | | It is a boreal species, one of the rarest in the family Syrphidae in Poland. It occurs in the north-east of the country, in the Augustów Forest and by the Biebrza river, where it reaches the southern border of its geographical range. Recently, its occurrence has only been found in the "Walik" nature reserve situated in the Wigry National Park and Biebrza National Park. These localities are probably the only or two of a few sites of Sphecomyia vittata, which is a relict of taiga forests, in north-eastern Poland. The principal threat to this saprophagous insect is loss of natural biotopes, i.e. old forests with a large share of spruce. Recommended is conservation of its habitats and protection of areas where S. vittata is found. The species is not protected by law. |
