| Summary | Clouded Apollo lives in two main areas in Poland: in the Carpathians and in north-east Poland. A separate population still exists in the Sudety Mts. It belongs to the species protected by law. The history of its distribution in Poland shows the shrinkage of the clouded apollo area of occurrence, which was best documented in the Sudety Mts. and in the Carpathians. Its habitat requirements and biology is well known, and the present Polish population totals some thousand imagines. Among the main threat factors are afforestation of forest glades and natural succession, tourism, illegal collection and overuse of chemicals in agriculture. Population prognosis assumes population abundance stability. It is suggested that current conservation measures should be supplemented by active re-introduction programs, which are considered as supportive for the natural re-colonization of distant suitable habitats. | |
