Summary  One of the rarest and local representatives of Syrphidae in Poland. Not protected by law. During the last ten-twenty years its occurrence has only been found in the "Konewka" nature reserve in the Spała Landscape Park. Earlier, it was observed in the vicinity of Szczecin, Poznań and Wrocław where single individuals were found. It is a saprophagous insect, associated with oak woods and mixed forests. The principal threat to Criorhina pachymera is removal of dead and decayed trees from forest. The recommended conservation method is protection of its localities in nature reserves, under the supervision of a specialist-entomologist.
