| Summary | A very rare species, considered a relict of primeval forests, known from few scattered localities, everywhere believed a great rarity, collected in single individuals, often at some tens of years' intervals. It develops under rotting bark in soft mould of lying trees or their fragments, feeding on decomposed wood and growing there fungi. In Poland it was noted in the 19th century on Romanka in the Beskid Żywiecki Mountains (Kotula 1873), in the early part of the 20th century on Równica in the Beskid Śląski Mountains (Burakowski, Mroczkowski, Stefańska 1987), and in the recent years in the Białowieża Forest (Borowski, Węgrzynowicz 2001). The principal threat to the species is the loss of suitable habitat. A fact that in all European localities only single adults are collected and a small number of larvae are observed testifies to the low reproduction success and small numbers of Phryganophilus ruficollis. Small local populations of this coleopteran are particularly endangered with extinction. Places of its occurrence should be protected in faunal reserves where it could find favourable conditions for its development. It has been under legal protection since 2001. | |
