Ctenophora ornata Meigen, 1818

Familia  Tipulidae
Ordo  Diptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  Ctenophora ornata is a very rare species of Diptera, occurring in the deciduous forest zone of Europe, at few scattered localities. In Poland it has only been found in the Świętokrzyski National Park and in the "Węże" forest reserve situated in the Załęcze Landscape Park. Larvae of C. ornata develop in dead moist trunks of deciduous trees, mostly trees with big diameters and at the advanced stage of decay. They were also found in tree cavities. The principal threat to the species is the shrinkage of the area of old forests of natural character, which causes also a threat to other species from the genus Ctenophora (C. fastuosa, C. flaveolata, C. guttata and C. pectinicornis). The only method of C. ornata conservation is development of the network of strictly protected forest areas and leaving in forest at least part of dead and hollow trees. It is not protected by law and does not need protection as a species.
