Stenopogon callosus (Pallas in Wiedemann, 1818)

Familia  Asilidae
Ordo  Diptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  Stenopogon callosus is a steppic species of Pontic distribution. In Poland it occurs at an isolated relict locality in Góry Pieprzowe Hills where it inhabits xerothermic grasslands Sisymbrio-Stipetum capillatae. At this location S. callosus occupies a very small area of some tens of hectares. The principal threat to this species is a gradual decrease in the area of xerothermic grasslands, caused by overgrowing with trees and shrubs. To maintain this unique species in the fauna of Poland, active protection of Góry Pieprzowe grasslands is needed; protection measures should focus on removal of expanding trees and shrubs. In addition, the area of the reserve should be extended, so as to cover all the local population of S. callosus.
