Brachymyia floccosa (Meigen, 1822)

Familia  Syrphidae
Ordo  Diptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  Brachymyia floccosa is one of the rarest species of the family Syrphidae in Poland. It occurs in old forests of primeval character. Not long ago, its occurrence was noted in Wrocław (in 1994) and in the Białowieża Forest; from the latter it has been reported many times. Earlier (1954) B. floccosa was also found in Jędrzejów. It is a forest saprophagous species, confined to rotting stands and decaying wood on which its larvae feed. The maintenance of its current localities requires that they should be protected in nature reserves. This postulate is largely satisfied by the Białowieża National Park. The species is not protected by law.
