Calitys scabra (Thunberg, 1784)

Pawężnica chropawa

Familia  Trogossitidae
Ordo  Coleoptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  Calitys scabra is a very rare coleopteran in Poland, reported mainly from southern regions. For more than 100 years it has not been noted. It inhabits old coniferous trees, mostly spruces, firs and pines. The species is connected with decomposed wood by fungi. Larvae lead probably a predatory mode of life and in certain periods of life feed also on mushroom spawn. A threat to species is degradation of forests and main biotopes. Not protected. It is proposed to restrict or to stop the removal of dead trees in the places of C. scabra occurrence and extend strict protection to their sites. The situation of this endangered species may be improved in Poland or at least the process of the shrinkage of its range may be stopped on condition that performance of some forest labours (particularly cleaning cutting) will change, and sites where the species will be discovered in future will be given special protection.
