Porthmidius austriacus (Schrank, 1781)

Ryżak austriacki

Familia  Elateridae
Ordo  Coleoptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  Porthmidius austriacus is a rare thermophilous European species, known in Poland from the only "Bielinek" nature reserve, situated on the Lower Odra River. It is the northernmost, isolated and probably relict locality of that beetle. P. austriacus is associated with forest-steppe, loose oak woods and other loose deciduous forests; it occurs also on xerothermic slopes sparsely overgrown with trees and shrubs. It develops in sandy-dusty, well-aerated and slightly overshadowed soils covered with dense turf. In Poland it is threatened primarily due to character of its occurrence (one marginal and isolated locality). It is important to maintain suitable habitats for this species on the escarpment of the reserve; they are unstable and require active conservation.
