Exoprosopa cleomene Egger, 1859

Familia  Bombyliidae
Ordo  Diptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  Exoprosopa cleomene is a xerothermic species of the Ponto-Mediterranean type of distribution. In Poland it occurs at one isolated locality in the Pieniny Mountains where inhabits calcareous xerothermic grasslands Origano-Brachypodietum, overgrowing steep, south-facing slopes. Areas inhabited by E. cleomene are well protected, as situated in the area of the Pieniny National Park. In addition, they are relatively difficult to access and situated far from tourist trails; therefore factors connected with human activity do not pose important threats to E. cleomene locality. The principal threat is overgrowing of grasslands by xerothermic shrub, as the species does not occur in places with dense shrub cover. To preserve the species in the Pieniny Mountains, its grassland habitat should be maintained in an unchanged state. At present, within the frame of the Apollo butterfly restitution project, in some localities shrubs are being removed, which should favour also the occurrence of E. cleomene. These measures should also be applied in the future. The species is not protected by law.
