| Summary | Catocala pacta belongs to the rarest and strongly endangered Noctuidae species in Poland. In the past century the considerable shrinkage of the range of this species was observed. It now occurs at three isolated localities in north-eastern Poland: Biebrza Marshes, Augustów Forest and Białowieża Forest. It is connected with natural marshy and peatland ecosystems where caterpillars feed on willows Salix spp. A strong reduction in its population and in the number of localities is attributed mainly to drainage of peatland and marshes carried out in the 20th century. The species is protected by law. It is recommended that this form of protection should be maintained and the system of nature reserves for conservation of the places of C. pacta occurrence should be developed. | |
