| Summary | Apollo Butterfly belongs to the most intensively collected and investigated species of invertebrates. Therefore one can reconstitute history of its decline in Poland since 18th century. The reconstruction shows permanent and steady reduction of occupied area, and decline of population abundance. Now population is restricted to two refuges in the Tatra Mts and the Pieniny Mts National Parks. Began in 1991 programme of population recovery in the Pieniny N.P. stabilised Polish population on a level of 800-1200 individuals. Among the most important causes of decline recognized were climatic catastrophes, natural succession and afforestation of apollo habitats, genetic and demographic stochasticity in small population, illegal collections and pollution. In Poland this butterfly species is strictly protected by law. | |
