Brachystegus scalaris (Illiger, 1807)

Ustylak

Familia  Sphecidae
Ordo  Hymenoptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  It is the only representative of the genus Brachystegus in Poland. The species is extremely scarce or even extinct, as its occurrence has not been confirmed for the last several decades. The existence of Tachytes panzeri, on which B. scalaris parasitizes, is threatened as well. Causes of the decline of both species may be attributed to changes occurring in the environment, and particularly in soil. Active protection of open habitats, such as xerothermic and sand grasslands, communities of steppe vegetation on sunny slopes is recommended; these are main biotopes of Brachystegus scalaris and the species on which it parasitizes. Not protected by law.
