Pericallia matronula (Linnaeus, 1758)
Large Tiger Moth
Niedźwiedziówka krasa

Familia  Arctiidae
Ordo  Lepidoptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  It is a forest-steppe, clearly disappearing species. Some tens of years ago it was known from the whole area of Poland, now its occurrence is limited to the south-eastern and eastern parts of the country (Carpathians, Białowieża Primeval Forest, "Gródek" Reserve near Hrubieszów). One may suspect that scarce and weakened local populations will continue to disappear. Pericallia matronula is everywhere rare and found as single individuals. Its decline is caused primarily by anthropogenic factors, such as destruction of suitable biotopes, collectorship, installation of street lamps within or in immediate vicinity to forest areas. Conservation efforts should concentrate on the maintenance of suitable biotopes in places where this moth occurs. It needs also legal protection as a species.
