Pytho kolwensis C.R. Sahlberg, 1833

Rozmiazg kolweński

Familia  Pythidae
Ordo  Coleoptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  A very rare species in the whole of its range, strongly endangered due to habitat loss, considered as a relict of primeval forests. It is a saproxylobionte, which develops under the bark of wind-fallen trees, lying horizontally for one to several years. In Poland its only localities are in the Białowieża National Park, which is situated at the south-western borders of the species range. The main threat to Pytho kolwensis is posed by the removal of fallen trees and drainage of marshy forest areas. Due to its specific ecological requirements the species can not develop in economic forests; a chance of surviving it has only in strictly protected areas. It has been under legal protection since 2001.
