Xylomyia maculata (Meigen, 1804)

Familia  Xylomyiidae
Ordo  Diptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  It is a very rare species within the whole of its range, associated with the deciduous forest zone of Europe. It is considered as a relict of primeval forests, threatened because habitats of this type are shrinking. In Poland it occurs in the Bia³owie¿a Forest, from which it was for the first time reported at the beginning of the 20th century. Recently, it has also been found in two locations in Silesia: Kar³owice and Gliwice Rudziniec. An individual found near Gliwice was probably brought there by accident. The principal threat to X. maculata is the shrinkage of the area of forests of primeval character and removal of dead, dying and hollow trees from forest, which are a potential developmental basis for the species. The so-called "tree surgery" may also have a negative influence. Because the larvae of X. maculata forage and develop in old forests in nature reserves, one should aim at the extension of strictly protected area in national parks and nature reserves, while in partial protection zones and in commercial forests the amount of dead wood and dying hollow trees, left on the spot, should be increased.
