| Summary | Behningia ulmeri is a very rare and extremely endangered lowland species. In Poland it was noted in the Vistula and Warta rivers in the years 1947-1962 and since then it has not been found in Polish rivers; it may have become extinct, as well. Any protective measures seem useless. Larvae of this species live in large rivers with sandy bottom and are adapted to burrowing in loose sand. The preferred habitats are large rivers, widely flooded, with braided channels. Habitats such as these have mostly disappeared as the result of river regulation; in addition, water pollution may have contributed to the definitive elimination of the species. Not protected by law in Poland. | |
