Summary  Aphaenogaster subterranea is a widely distributed Mediterranean species, whose northern part of the range extends to the south of Central Europe; it is an oligotope, associated with warm deciduous forests. One reliable record from the area of present Poland (Lower Silesia and Kłodzko Region) is dated from the earlier part of the 19th century. There is a possibility of its sporadic (and temporary) occurrence in the south of the country. Any forms of protection are useless in Poland.
