Caliprobola speciosa (Rossi, 1790)

Familia  Syrphidae
Ordo  Diptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  It is one of rarer and locally occurring species of the family Syrphidae. In Poland it has recently been found in the Góry Świętokrzyskie Mts., in the Nida Valley, in the "Lubiaszów" nature reserve near Sulejów, and its occurrence has been confirmed in the Bieszczady Mountains. Formerly it was noted in the vicinity of Szczecin, Gdańsk, in the Góry Sowie Mts. in the Sudety Mts. and somewhere in the Carpathians. The populations and localities of the species are threatened by forest operations which consist in the removal of dead and decaying wood, in which Caliprobola speciosa larvae develop. Conservation efforts should focus on conservation of its biotopes and areas where imagines are observed; the assistance of a specialist-entomologist is recommended. Not protected by law.
