Aporus pollux (Kohl, 1888)

Żwin polluks

Familia  Pompilidae
Ordo  Hymenoptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  It is a very rare, Ponto-Mediterranean insect species, declining in Central Europe. In Poland it is known from two current localities in the southern part of the country; one of them is situated in the Ojców National Park. The most important cause of the regress of A. pollux is shrinkage in the area of xerothermic grasslands which are suitable habitats of the species; part of these habitats originated as the result of human husbandry (pasturing and rearing of animals). They are now undergoing successional changes due to cessation of management. The maintenance of the species requires active protection of its habitat: removal of trees and shrubs from xerothermic grasslands each several years to prevent succession towards forest communities; this aim may be achieved also through introduction of controlled grazing (sheep or goats) or mowing of xerothermic grasslands, as well as preventing afforestation of these habitats. Protective measures should be accompanied by monitoring of A. pollux localities and populations.
