Boros schneideri (Panzer, 1796)

Ponurek Schneidera

Familia  Boridae
Ordo  Coleoptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  A very rare species, assigned to the relicts of primeval forests; it is on the verge of extinction due to intense exploitation of forests. Since 2004 it has been protected by law. In Poland it is known from the Mazurian Lakes, Białowieża Forest, Góry Świętokrzyskie Mountains, the environs of Przemyśl and the Tatra Mountains (Burakowski, Mroczkowski, Stefańska 1987). These records came from different periods of the 20th century; only localities in Białowieża Forest have recently been confirmed (Gutowski J.M., Kubisz D. - own data). Apart from the localities in the north-eastern Poland, lying on the border of the continuous range of the species, all the remaining Polish localities (as well as others in Central Europe) have a relict character and are much scattered, supporting only small populations. Economic forests that prevail in Central Europe do not provide suitable conditions for the development of this species. Their poor species composition and young age of stands, as well as tending of woods (improvement felling and cleaning cutting) and intense exploitation of forests cause that Boros schneideri populations in Poland are strongly endangered. The only effective form of conservation is strict protection of its biotopes.
