| Summary | It is a very rare, local and declining Mediterranean species, associated with elms which are also in decline, as attacked by Dutch elm disease. In Poland it has not been noted for about 30 years. A gradual reduction in its food base has been observed as well. It is known from 6 localities in the country, of which only 2 (Poznań and Świętokrzyski National Park) were reported from the period of 1951-1975, the remaining ones are dated from the earlier period. As to conservation proposals, it is recommended that elms should be promoted in forest regeneration, as well as in forest plantations and parks. Conservation of all groups of old elms as well as planting of young elm generation is needed to secure the future basis for development of rare insect species, including Saperda punctata. | |
