Hyperoscelis eximia (Boheman, 1858)

Familia  Canthyloscelidae
Ordo  Diptera
Classis  Insecta
Typus  Arthropoda

Summary  Hyperoscelis eximia is a rare representative of the relict family, considered as an indicatory species of old natural forests. In Poland it has so far been known from the Ojców National Park, Roztocze National Park and its surroundings (Turzyniec) and from the Świętokrzyski National Park. Larvae are saproxylobiontes; they develop in wet dead wood attacked by brown rot. Preferred habitat for laying eggs is wood at the advanced stage of decay. Therefore the species finds good conditions for development in only strictly protected forest areas. The greatest threat to H. eximia and to other saproxylobiontes is the removal of dead wood from forests where its larvae develop. This activity reduces possibilities of the species development to national parks and nature reserves. To maintain H. eximia in not-protected forests, felling of dying trees should be limited and at least some dead wood should be left in forests.
